Why introduce a new course in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Hazard Management for Emergency & Recovery Personnel?

This new and unique version of the IMI Level 2 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Hazard Management for Emergency and Recovery Personnel will address the critical need for safety measures when responding to incidents involving an Electric/Hybrid Vehicle.

Candidates will receive comprehensive instruction in how to identify different types of Electric/Hybrid Vehicles, different types of high-voltage components, how to work safely with live components, and specialised Responder safety awareness, including how to safely respond to and manage EV/Hybrid fire-related incidents in emergency situations.

Responders, Recovery Agents and Investigators faced with a damaged Electric/Hybrid Vehicle following collision and/or fire NEED specialised training to ensure their safety and public safety, while effectively managing the incident in a dynamic and complex environment. Through this unique collaboration, leading training providers Pro-Tech MOT & Automotive Academy and FireWiseUK Learning Academy have developed the first and only EV Responder course that covers both the critical “why” and the practical “how”.

Key features of the course

• Learn how to identify different types of EV/Hybrid Vehicles, the high voltage technologies and components, and the significant potential hazards associated with EV/Hybrid Vehicles when involved in a collision and/or fire.

• Safety and risk mitigation protocols explicitly tailored for emergency responders, investigators, and recovery operators using the IAIIM protocol.

• Extensive hands-on practical training in identifying potential fire hazards such as live high voltage components with Electric/Hybrid Vehicles and preventing fire risks.

• Real-life simulations and exercises to prepare candidates for actual fire- related / accident-damaged vehicle incidents they may face on the job.

• PPE, RPE and response equipment

• Extrication & trauma care considerations and options

• Thermal events, and containment/suppression tactics

• Handing over risk information, the recovery, transport and storage of damaged EV/Hybrid Vehicles and/or components

• IMI Certification upon completion.

Practical sessions will be undertaken on a variety of stripped-down Electric and hybrid vehicles, roadworthy EVs, and accident-damaged EVs/hybrids, using a wide range of EV-related response equipment.

Please note: For Fire and Rescue personnel, the course is also mapped against the NFCC and UKRO Extrication Competency Framework.

Who is the course for?

The course is open to all candidates who may encounter damaged Electric/Hybrid Vehicles, such as Fire Service Personnel, Investigators, other emergency responders, partner agencies and Recovery Operators. By combining Pro-Tech’s expertise in automotive education with FireWiseUK Learning Academy’s reputation for top-tier Responder training, candidates will be well-equipped to ensure their safety when responding to and managing emergency incidents involving damaged Electric vehicles.
