Understanding your regulatory responsibilities and the key tasks to complete
New ownership or directorship of an MOT centre is an exciting chapter filled with opportunities for growth and fresh perspectives. However, this transition also comes with critical administrative and regulatory responsibilities. Ensuring compliance with legal requirements is essential to maintaining seamless operations.
In this blog, we’ll outline the key actions you must take, the potential consequences of neglecting them, and how Pro-Tech can help you navigate this process efficiently.
Please note: Full information can be found on the gov.uk website - HERE - this blog is intended as an overview and our take on what is required. It does not replace or supercede any official information.

Key Actions Required During Ownership/Directorship Changes
Notify the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA)
One of the first and most important steps is notifying the DVSA about changes in ownership or directorship. This involves:
Submitting the VT01 Form: Use the Apply to open, run or change an MOT test station form (VT01) to inform the DVSA of the changes.
Creating MOT Testing Service Accounts: Ensure that all new Directors set up their accounts on the MOT Testing Service platform.
Providing Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Checks: New partners or directors must provide basic DBS checks to verify their eligibility to operate a test station.
Update Authorised Examiner (AE) Details
Any changes to AE details, such as the addition or removal of directors or partners, must be promptly reported to the DVSA. This ensures that your records are up-to-date and compliant with regulations. Find detailed guidance on how to update AE details.
Review and Update Site Management
Every MOT centre must appoint a competent Site Manager to oversee daily operations. This individual should be well-trained and fully understand their responsibilities. Should a change of directors mean that a previous Site Manager is no longer linked to the business, then it is important that details are updated and that a suitably competent individual is recognised in this position, and that this has been notified to the DVSA. Site Managers can also be added by the AEDM via MTS on the VTS page
DVSA Disciplinary Action
Failing to address these requirements can have serious repercussions, including:
Suspension of Testing Privileges
Without proper notification and documentation, your MOT test station’s authorisation may be suspended.
Penalties
Failure to notify DVSA of a change in the constitution or operation of a business, a change to, or of an approved site, or the failure to cease testing after such a change pending DVSA’s written confirmation that testing may resume could result in 500 or 100 disciplinary points.
How the Pro-Tech Team Can Assist
Navigating ownership and directorship changes can feel overwhelming. It’s easy to state that all of the information is on the Government website (link at the top), but we know just how busy life can be and that finding the time to get this completed in the appropriate timeframes can be difficult.
Pro-Tech is here to make the process straightforward and stress-free. Both Leigh and Amy have significant experience in completing this process and are here to help. We can provide:
Documentation Support
Where appropriate, we can assist in accurately completing and submitting forms, such as the VT01, to the DVSA. We will refer to expert support from solicitors to ensure that all wording is correct, particularly in respect of leases and covering letters.
Training Services
Pro-Tech offers comprehensive training programs for new AEDM’s, AEPs and Site Managers, equipping them with the knowledge to maintain high testing standards. This ongoing support is key - notifying the DVSA of any changes is the start of your journey; not the end!
We can also help to establish robust policies and procedures to ensure long-term compliance with MOT regulations.
